We had quite the adventure this past weekend:

So, I don't know if it's known in America or not, but there have been some pretty bad floods in Poland this summer. Last week, a big dam burst in the south-west region of Poland (over by Zgorzelec, where I once served), and there were some really bad floods. Elder Torke and I, along with Sister Nielson, Elder and Sister Harding, and three members, we all went down and helped bring stuff to them. We got a call on Thursday that "we would be going on a field trip" and so, Friday morning, at 4:00, we started our adventure. We picked up Sister Nielson, and then drove over to the Chapel to meet everyone else. We had the Mission Van which we had filled the night before with donated itmes like blankets and clothing, and and then started our drive to Zgorzelec. It was over in that area where the recent flooding was. We made a detour and went to another city called Kielce to pick up stuff that the branch there had been collecting. So, after a full day of driving and everything, we finally made it to Zgorzelec at 9:30. At night. That means 21:30. We had also stopped in Wrocław where we had rented a van and a driver. We had received 10,000 dollars US for Humanitarian stuff. So, we filled the rented truck with baby diapers, infant food, soaps, shovels, and all sorts of stuff. When we got to Zgorzelec, we unloaded all of the things from the rented van, and the man took it back to Wrocław (about 2 hours from Zgorzelec.) There was a big 18-wheeler truck that had been donated to use by a local banana importer company, so that's where all of the relief materials are being collected in Zgorzelec. We spent the night there in Zgorzelec, and then the next day, Saturday, we went to an area which had been hit really bad: Bogatynia. It is right in this little notch in Poland that is right next door to both Germany and the Czech Republic. The actually main roads to get into Bogatynia had been flooded over, so we had to drive down through the Czech republic to get in. I was driving and we were on these little back roads that had some crazy puddles and bumps and flying around at about 40 miles an hour. It was way fun. We were in a caravan of about 5 cars: the Mission van, the Harding's mission vehicle, and 3 local vans that were also hauling things. And we had permission from the local Police and stuff to run the red lights and go speeding and use our horn as necessary to warn everybody to get out of our way. I used it as necessary :). So when we got to Bogatynia, it was pretty crazy. There was a lot of destruction from the river. Houses that had been literally sliced in half, roads that had crumbled away, bridges that had fallen, water damage on houses which were lucky enough to still be standing, etc. I think that it'll take years before it is back to normal. We were able to maneuver our way around the broken parts of the road and tried to get in as far as we could. Then we opened the trunks and people started coming up and asking for things and we started getting all of the boxes out. People were going through them and taking out the things that they needed. After a while, the crowds died down and we packed the boxes back up and put them in our vehicles. We took all of the remaining items and dropped them off at this school which was being used kind of as a drop off/collection point for people in the area. After that, we had to get back to Zgorzelec through Germany because the roads in the Czech had flooded over since we had been there. So, I was in three different countries in the space of one day! Wild! but yeah, we started heading back to Warsaw at about 4:00/5:00-ish and we pulled up to our apartment after having dropped people off and everything at about 1:30, early Sunday morning. I was able to stay awake all through Church, except during the last hour. My head was bobbing around...President Nielson made fun of me about it after church...haha.

But yeah, that was our pretty wild adventure! I think what the people need there the most is just people. People who can help clean, fix, repair, organize, etc. Sure we can bring them things and everything, but who is going to help them do the clean up work? It'll take months/years. The Polish Army was there helping out and everything, so that's good.

Other than that, our week was kind of the same. Elder Torke is doing well. He is getting used to The Office. The man that he contacted and gave a Book of Mormon to that one time hasn't been answering his phone or texting back or anything. So, we'll see if we can't get a hold of him somehow.

Thanks for sending the package! It hasn't arrived yet, but I'll sure be glad when it does. I've been waiting for those new shoes for a while. The ones I'm working on are getting pretty sad and hole-y. Heh, get it? Hole-y? Holy? Like, spiritual? Mehh, nevermind...

Well, cool. That's pretty much our week. Have a cool day/week and I love you all! Shave your faces!

Love, Starszy Lewis

Hey my family! 7.8.10

Hey family and everyone,

Thanks for writing. We've had a pretty good week. Elder Torke is a really funny guy. Maybe it's because he's German, or maybe because Europeans are just funny people, but he says some of the darndest things! I've started keeping a list in my planner of all of the crazy things that he says. And he has a funny accent.

Hmm, this past week has been kind of bland again. Office life is pretty routine: Wake up, shower/eat/study, drive to the office, do stuff for a few hours, realize it's 18:00 and you're free, spend the evening as desired, go home. Usually we like to go to the disco bar or catch a film in the evenings. Haha, just kidding! We do whiteboards or attend FHE or Institute and try to get a meeting in when we can. Elder Torke met this guy last week on a whiteboard and he gave him a Book of Mormon. Torke called the guy the other day and the dude said that he's been reading from the BoM and it's not too bad. Now THAT'S not too bad!

There was a baptism today. Our sisters baptized a lady named Pauline. She's from Africa (somehwere, not too sure...) and she's been meeting with the missionaries for a while now. So thats way cool. We went with the sisters after the baptism to TGI Friday's. I ate some brownies and ice cream.

Today, while we were sitting in our Misison van (the warsaw district president sometimes borrows our car on the weekends and we then are stuck with "The Transporter." Actually, it's way fuin to drive. you basically control the flow of traffic) I had kind of this revelation on how to make a lot of money. It involves a rapper persona and writing positive, uplifting, childrens raps/music and having school districts hire me for elementary school assemblies. And there would be a play and I would rap and stuff about why drugs are bad, to stay in school, combat bullying, and sharing. I really think that it'll work big time. For real.

Elder Torke and I played some pool this morning. We have a pool table in our apartment and we like to play with it. Some missionaries before us bought it and that is nice. Our apartment actually has a lot of amenities thanks to former missionaries: pool table, magnet dart board, weights, punching bag, trampoline, nice music speakers, and left over bubble-bath stuff. I took a bubble bath the other day. It was pretty fun for the first 10-15 minutes and then it got kind of boring. I didn't really know what one is supposed to do in a bubble bath. So, I let the water out and smeared the bubbles all over and made like a slip-and-slide in the bathtub. It kind of hurt my spine though...

That's cool that you'all are out visiting Chris and Anna. Give Soapy and Jo-jo a couple high fives from me!

Well, I think that that's mostly it! Have a cool week and be sure to keep your feet dry!

Love, Starszy Lewis

What I've done since I've been home

1. Thus, read the following:

Pay It Forward--a little blog game called "Pay it forward."
How it works: The FIRST THREE people to leave a comment on this post will receive at some point during this year a gift from ME. What it will be and when it will arrive will be a total surprise. The CATCH is that YOU MUST PLAY TOO! Before you leave your comment here, write a pay it forward post on your blog to keep the fun going (you can cut and paste these instructions). Then come back and let me know that you are going to play, and sit back and anticipate the arrival of your gift.

If you're lucky, I'll probably be in Poland when you get your gift. Maybe it'll be some sweet Polish knives or a car radio. Or some Polish air in a water bottle. I was pranked really good.

See, my roommate Jordan has a girlfriend. And her name is Nicole. And she and her roommates decided they wanted to make us cookies. So, they gave them to Jordan to bring back to our dorm that night when we all came home. We all ate them and they were sooo good! I ate at least 10 cookies.

The next day, me and some other guys were having "intestinal issues." Other guys were having rumbly stomachs and didn't have any "issues" until later that evening. As I was wondering what could have caused these problems, I asked another guy and he said that Nicole's Facebook status said something about pulling an "ex-lax prank." I immediately marched over to their apartment and asked them about it. They were all dying of laughter when I came in. Yes, they had loaded those cookies with Ex-Lax. No wonder my day had been so horrible. I'm not going to go into details about anything, but there were some close calls. Especially in the library. Anyway, in short, Ex-Lax works, and don't accept any food from anyone on April first.

The Polish Book of Mormon

I bought a Polish Book of Mormon the other day at the distrubution center and it looks pretty crazzy! I'm not talking about those amusement ones you go to around Halloween time. I'm talking about houses that are actually reported to be haunted. This one in particular is shall be known as House 343 in St. Anthony, ID.

A few guys on our floor heard stories about this abandoned house about 20 minutes from Rexburg. Ghost stories. As in the guy who told the stories has for certain seen things in that house and will take people there, but not go in anymore. We decided we would go. So, a group of about 10 of us drove out there and it was definitely freaky. On the way down, we realized that it was early moring on Friday the 13th. Uh oh. When we got there, we were standing out in front of the house debating whether to go in or not. While standing there, a random car pulled up and there were two teenage guys in it who said that the house was haunted and they had gone in by themselves. We went inside and explored around a little bit. There was trash and things that I guess people just drop off that they dont want anymore: lamps, couches, books, mirrors, and tons of other junk. We didn't actually see anything because some of the guys were being loud and annoying and we think it scared the ghosts off. But, the picture below is of the front of the house. Look up in the window in the upper left corner. You see it? We all think its pretty freaky looking.

Ohh, just looking at it gives me the heebie jeebies. Hey get out of here! We don't want ya!

That's right, I cut my hair missionary style. And I did most of it myself, so I'm pretty proud of it. It was actually a haircut in three installments. The first night, I cut it to look kind of like a Spanish mullet, in that it is still long on top but does sort of a mullet thing on the way down the back and is short on the sides. Like this: But it wasnt that long on the back, but it looked pretty cool.
The next night, I realized that it was a little uneven so I decided to even it out and fix it up a little bit. But, I cut off too much on the top, so it just looked like a metal kid mohawk. And whenever I looked in the mirror, I wanted to go put on a black t-shirt with the sleeves cut, gain 50 pounds, pierce my eyebrows, and go beat up some kids.
So then, the third and final night, I just took the shaver and chopped everything off. The top is a number 8 down to the nape of my neck, and the sides are a 6. But you can't really tell. So its classy yet classic. Here's a visual:

Poland, Warsaw

That is where I got called on my mission! I report to the Provo MTC on May 13th. And, I get to learn Polish! I've been looking at the Polish language, and it is nothing like German or English. Probably because it is a Slavic language, and English and German are Germanic. But, lucky for me, English and German are the second best known languages in Poland. The internet is so smart.

My mission covers all of Poland, and just Poland. I was supposed to fly out of Idaho Falls today, but because it was so snowy, we decided to drive to the airport a little more cautiously.
My flight was supposed to leave at 1:14, and we got to the airport at about 12:45. Now, the Idaho Falls Regional Airport is very small, so there was hardly anyone there. I go to the check-in desk, and the lady behind the counter asks if I want to go on the flight to Denver. I say "Yes" and she then tells me that if I want to, I'll have to either ditch my bag or rebook for another flight, because I'm too late. I ask if there's any way at all to get my luggage onto the plane, and she says I'll either have to ditch my luggage or rebook for another flight. I even asked the TSA people there if they could sneak it on, but they said I'd have to talk to the check-in lady. But we already know what her reply is. So, I called Dad and he said that we'd just have to rebook the flight. Which he did, so now I am flying out tomorrow, Sunday, at basically the same time.

So that's my sad story. 63.

Also, I accidentally spilled orange soda all over my laptop early this morning. And so now the space bar is SUPER sticky and I basically have to punch it with my thumbs if I want it to work. Man, this blog post was hard to write. Double 63.

Ice Caves

So, tonight, as in from Friday night to early Saturday morning, we went to the ice caves. These are different from the normal caves in two ways: it is way more challenging to go through, and everything is covered in ice. It was pretty amazing. And I went with a girl. Yes mom, as in a date.

But, yeah, those caves are probably the coolest thing to do in eastern Idaho. You have to basically crouch and army crawl all over the place. And at the end, there is this room with an ice slide. It was like an amusement park, but free, and you get wet and covered in cave particles. It was super fun, and super cold.

I even have some cool battle scars from falling and slipping all over.

"Three things"

Ok, so, I've been living life for the past couple of days constantly trying to come up with the master blog post idea in my head. After much deliberation with myself, I have come up with and idea. I'd like to call it "Three things." The basic idea is to come up with categories to ask yourself, and then to list three different things in that category. For example, say I wanted to do...Three things that taste really good to me. 1) Cap'n Crunch's Crunch Berries, 2) Take 5's, and 3) Rolls. See how easy it is? Maybe this could be the next big writing technique taught at schools all over America? We'll see.
Ok, here are some categories and answers:

Three types of clothing I hate on people: Bootcut jeans, T-shirts that are too big so the shoulder seam is down at their bicep, and finally, anything with skulls.

Three weird things I have drunken/eaten: Horse (in Italy), Pool water (thourought my life at various pools), and Evan Fiala's sweat.

Three pets I have had: Goldie the goldfish, Jack the hamster, and various bugs and critters that would hang out with me in the basement.

Three last songs I have listened to by different artists: Forget About The Forecast by The Arrival; I Can Get Back Up Now by You, Me, And Everyone We Know; Without Gravity by PlayRadioPlay!.

That's it. That's how easy my "Three things" idea is. Feel free to use it if you like. It's so simple, you can do it anytime, anywhere, anyhow.

December 16

Not only is my birthday on December 16, but there are also other people who also have their brithdays on the 16th.

1. Bryan brought his computer back there as well, so we had a little drawing contest. I won't tell you what I asked him to draw, because he might put it online sometime. But, Bryan asked me to draw the following: a mouse, surfing on an ironing board, in a bowl full of tomato soup, with a giant putting his spoon in the soup and the mouse is going to surf into the spoon. So we went there and had a good time. The guy at the cashier made fun of what I was wearing (short shorts and a beater. He's a pretty cool guy), we got our food, and were sitting in Marks car just eating our food. All of a sudden, two cops pulled up on our right in the parking lot and just sit there. They didn't do anything, so we decided to go back to the dorm. Then one of them followed us out of the parking lot, and once we were on the road, he turns on his lights. And you know why? Because our windows were foggy and it was obstructing our vision.

Ok, so ha ha, that was funny.

We continue down Main Street heading back to the dorms. We stop at a red light and see two more cops opposite from us waiting at the red light as well. We're joking at how funny it would be if we got pulled over again.

So, the light turns green and we start driving. And one of the cops makes a u-turn in the street, follows us a little and then turns on his lights as well. Wow, two pull-overs in less than five minutes. The second one was for having too many people in a car (we were all buckled), and one of the tail lights goes out periodically, and it just so did this night.

Luckily, neither of the cops gave Mark a ticket or anything.

Well, there's a witty anecdote for you all. Do any of you have any funny police stories? I have some more, but I'll let you share.

Music and a cool job

Ok, so, I'm kind of weird, and what you are about to read may sound awkward.

I've spent the last 20 minutes on Youtube trying to find a video of the home screen of the Wii just to listen to the music.

And here is a good one:

I really like how it's ambient and all like that. So, because the fire was so big and fiery, we decided to jump over it.

Now, don't get me wrong. I cleared that jump like a pro, but at the last second, I decided to turn my head and look back at the fire. That's when the flame hit my face.

It didn't burn or anything, but I could smell burnt hair. Here's the story:

Some peeps were going to go to the pool during the evening and invited to me tag along.
So i did.
After we were done, we went outside, and it was crazy snowing! We ran over to the football field and played in the snow there. We were having a snowball fight, and, thanks to my natural scent and rugged good looks, some girls came over and started throwing snow at us. We we played with them for a little bit but they left because they had to go work on homework. So we played a little longer and then went inside. It was definitely cool. Halloween was cool. There was a dance at this place, but it was super hot (temperature wise) and tons of the local rebellious Rexburg youth were drunk/high, so we left and watched part of Cloverfield. We wanted to go trick-or-treating but I was informed that it is illegal for us College kids to do so in Rexburg. So, anyways, on Sunday, Jordan (my roomate) and I accidently slept through Stake Conference and then we woke up and went to Jordan's girlfriend's roommate's birthday festivities. It was fun. I gave her a picture of her riding a unicorn through space. Pictures are on Facebook somewhere if you want to look at them. Hmmm...what else. Oh yeah! We tried to go to the bi-weekly evening hip-hop class on Thursday, but no one was there! Probably watching the Office or something. So we did some cartwheels and played with some jump ropes and left.

That is the extent of my life in Idaho.

Thanks Soapers!!

I wanted to send Soaps an email because she persuaded her mom and dad into sending me a package. More like pal and his gal and her gal roommates. That was the earliest I've woken up on a Saturday in a long time. Anyhoo, whilst there, I was able to find my complete Halloween costume. I am being AJ Mclean from the Backstreet Boys. The other four members are being portrayed by other guys. My costume includes: a white tank top, black track pants, and some white leather high top Converses which I am super ecstatic about. I am also growing a moustache as AJ likes to style a goatee. I will probably use an eyelash makeup brush thingy on the facial hair that'll be there to make it dark (thanks for the idea Lisa!).
At DI, I also purchased the following: a pair of short shorts, some sweet pseudo moccasin sandals, a black/baby blue wool hat (complete with poof on top), and some movies. All in all I'd say twas a good run.
Expect pictures of the 'Backstreet Boys' sometime, so you can see the awesome costumes.

The Haunted Mill

Tonight, our ward, the BYU-Idaho 60th ward of the BYU-Idaho First stake, had a ward activity where we went to a haunted house in Teton, ID. It's called 'The Haunted Mill' and has been in business for 11 years. It's pretty dang scary. You go up into the mill, and below it, and in a storage shed, and a bridge, and its all well done. The masks the actors use are professionally made masks like warthogs and aliens and creepers and everything. It was crazy.
It takes about 1.25 hours to go through it, so it's well worth the $5.

Debit cards and Chinese companies

A couple days ago I tried buying some hoodies and t-shirts online. Normally, hoodies, like the kind I wanted to buy, run anywhere from $250-$400. But the ones I was buying were fake, so they were brought down to $55 a piece. Yessss.

These weren't any run-of-the-mill replicas though, they were BAPE and Billionaire Boys Club, both known for being bought by rappers and spoiled white kids. I fall into the category of a white kid who had a job over the summer and earned his own money.

Anyways, when trying to order these articles of clothing, the company had on their site that they only ship to addresses where the billing and mailing address match. Mine didn't , but I thought that they didn't enforce it. They did. My order was declined, and I was still billed for my purchase. I emailed USAA and asked them to remove the proposed transaction, and they said to give the Chinese company the USAA phone number to call and to verify that the transaction should be voided. When I checked my account status online, the order had been removed, and I got my money back! Now I just have to watch it closely to make sure the company doesn't try to do anything else sneaky...

I just went ahead and bought some hoodies from a well known American based company instead. I doubt there'll be any sneakage going on there.

Moral of the story, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. And sneaky companies. But you probably don't want to use an apple, you'll probably want to go with a good phone number or e-mail address.

**As requested, here are pictures of the hoodies and tees**

The Forecast

So it's supposed to snow tonight/this weekend/sometime. Hopefully it does. It flurried the other day as I was walking to class, but my sources (yes, sources, I have multiple friends) have said that this snow may reach up to one foot. If it does, or if it even gets to one inch, I will be having fun in the current 28 degree weather. I haven't seen real snow in a while, due to the fact of having a "green" Christmas in VA last year, so I'm hoping for a plethora of snow.

Double copy cat

So after having read Chris' new blog, I figured I'm the only unit in my family that doesn't have a blog (except for stinky kid), so I decided to join the bandwagon. And I'm also going to do the questionnaire, because I want to fit in instead of being the awkward puzzle piece.
Ok, so here goes:

5 Things I’ve done in the past 10 years

            1. Successfully washed a load of laundry by myself.

            2. Shaved my head. Twice.

            3. Walked a half hour just to go to DI. And not get anything.

            4. Graduated high school.

            5. Watched all 8 hours of the "Band of Brothers" series in one sitting. Again, twice.

5 things I wish I could do today

            1. Get started on homework.

            2. Buy some stamps.

            3. Empty my trash receptacle.

            4. Get my tattoo removed. (Hahaha, just kidding mom!)

            5. Sell my plasma down the street.

5 foods I wouldn’t want to do without

            1. Take 5's

            2. Meat

            3. Hire some folks to constantly play theme music to my life.

            3. Make a corn maze out of candy corn.

            4. Buy a plane ticket and fly around the world.

            5. Spend all the rest to win the big dog at the amusement park games.

5 places I have lived

            1.
